When you pick up the milk box, you can visually see that cardboard and plastic film are part of the milk box. But in fact, aluminum foil is often used as a barrier material in sterile packaging such as milk boxes. After a century‘s development, aluminum foil has become a popular packaging material, and food and beverage are a key contributor to the global aluminum foil packaging market.

The data shows that the scale of global food packaging aluminum foil market in 2022 is approximately 28.4 billion yuan; Up to 2022, the proportion of applications in the food industry ranks first in the aluminum foil packaging application market.

In 1911, since the Swiss candy company first packaged chocolate with aluminum foil, developed countries in Europe and America have begun a history of widespread use of aluminum foil for food packaging. In the 1930s, aluminum foil also fully occupied the packaging market of butter and cheese in Europe. Research at that time showed that aluminum foil packaging could extend the shelf life of butter by two to three months. Nowadays, aluminum foil packaging in developed countries in Europe and America has accounted for 70-75% of the total market share.

However, the production of aluminum foil in China did not begin until 1932, and the use of aluminum foil for food packaging lagged even further. Although China is the largest producer, seller, and exporter of aluminum foil, the packaging application proportion of aluminum foil once only accounted for 17%. With the development of China's food and beverage industry and food delivery industry, it is expected that the consumption of aluminum foil in packaging will further increase to 1.32 million tons in 2026. With its advantages of high barrier and low cost, aluminum foil packaging will be increasingly used in various packaged foods, dairy products, pre made dishes, and food delivery boxes in China.

From a national and regional perspective, China's aluminum foil production scale ranks among the top in the world, with a large export scale. Aluminum foil production accounts for about 60% -65% of the world's aluminum foil production, making it the world's largest producer, seller, and exporter. In 2021, the total production of aluminum foil in China was 4.55 million tons, of which packaging aluminum foil accounted for the largest proportion, with a production volume of 2.65 million tons.

Food packaging aluminum foil is an important market for the application of aluminum foil. The QYResearch survey results show that the global food packaging aluminum foil market size in 2022 is approximately 28.4 billion yuan (RMB), and it is expected to reach 41.8 billion yuan in 2029. The compound annual growth rate (CAGR) for the period from 2023 to 2029 is 5.6%.

In recent years, relevant departments in China have also begun to introduce policies to support the production and application of aluminum foil for food packaging. In August 2023, seven departments jointly issued the "Work Plan for Stable Growth of Nonferrous Metals Industry", which clearly stated the need to accelerate the promotion of aluminum foil packaging products for food. This statement also appeared for the first time in a national ministerial level document.
